Day 4: Salon Entrepreneurship + Get Out and Move!
Lesson Overview
| Time | 50 minutes |
| Objectives | Identify entrepreneurial opportunities in the beauty industry; sketch a salon business concept; complete the H&L "Get Out and Move!" Career Lab brainstorm and event plan steps |
| TEKS | d(3)(I) |
| Deliverable | Salon business concept sketch + Get Out and Move! event activity list and pledge draft |
| Materials | H&L Workbook Ch 11 (pp. 184-187, "Get Out and Move!"), salon concept template, event plan template, projector |
Warm-Up (5 min)
WARM-UP: Would you rather work IN someone else's salon or OWN your own salon? What's good and bad about each?
Take 4-5 student responses. Surface both sides, employees have stable pay and no risk; owners have higher potential income but take on rent, payroll, and inventory costs.
Activity 1: Salon Business Concept Sketch (15 min)
Source: TEKS d(3)(I): Define entrepreneurship and identify entrepreneurial opportunities
Project an example salon business concept on the board:
| Element | Example |
|---|---|
| Business Name | Reset Studio |
| Services Offered | Haircuts, color, scalp treatments, hot oil |
| Target Customer | Working professionals 25-45 looking for a relaxing 60-90 min experience |
| Location | Las Colinas (high foot traffic, mid-range income area) |
| Unique Selling Point | Calm music, plant-filled space, free 5-min scalp massage with every cut |
| One Business Skill Needed | Customer scheduling software / inventory management |
Students sketch their OWN salon (or barber shop, nail salon, spa, or skin care studio) on the concept template. They must include all 6 elements above.
The point: cosmetology is creative, but the BUSINESS side requires a different set of skills, accounting, marketing, scheduling, supply ordering. An entrepreneur in cosmetology has to learn both sides.
Facilitation Tip
Students often pick the "Unique Selling Point" too generic ("good service" or "low prices"). Push them: what is something that NO other salon in your area is doing? That's the actual hook.
Activity 2: H&L "Get Out and Move!" Activity Planning (25 min)
Source: H&L Workbook Ch 11, pp. 184-187, "Get Out and Move!" (Career Lab activity)
Read aloud the workbook background (Ch 11, p. 184): Students get into small groups of 3-4. They are now the Get Out and Move Planning Committee. Their job is to plan a community fair event for the city of Fairview that promotes physical activity and outdoor fun for families.
Project the Get Out and Move Playbook from the workbook (Ch 11, p. 185-186):
- Event hours: 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM
- Location: Riverstone Commons Park (large grassy areas, paved trails, covered pavilions, stage with electricity, playgrounds, splash pad, restrooms)
- Activity examples from past years (workbook p. 186): obstacle courses, group dance sessions, sidewalk chalk murals, tug of war, sports clinics, healthy snack tastings
- Recommendations: include creativity/collaboration/competition activities, involve local businesses and wellness providers, design accessible activities, plan for shaded/weather-friendly options, prioritize screen-free hands-on engagement
Step 1: Brainstorm the Event Plan (workbook p. 186): Groups discuss and decide on at least 5 fun activities for the event. They write the activities in the workbook brainstorm space, including why each is enjoyable and good for physical health.
Step 2: Create the Event Pledge (workbook p. 187): Groups draft a pledge that every attendee will sign, promising to spend the day being active instead of using technology. The pledge should be:
- Short, easy to understand, motivating
- Visually appealing
- Include a fun slogan
Groups draft the activity list and pledge today. (The flyer and presentation steps from the workbook can be assigned as extensions or completed in Week 6 if time allows.)
DOK 4: This activity puts you in the role of a Health & Wellness Coordinator. How does this career connect to cosmetology? (Hint: both are about helping people feel and look their best.)
Activity 3: Quick Class Share (3 min)
In the last 3 minutes, ask 2 groups to share their top 2 activity ideas and their pledge slogan. Surface the most creative ones.
Exit Ticket (2 min)
EXIT TICKET (Decision Tree / Branching Prompt) · Printable PDF:
My beauty business idea (circle one or add your own): salon / barber shop / nail studio / skincare studio / mobile stylist / other: _______
Step 1: What is ONE thing my business will do that NO other shop in the area is doing? (unique selling point)
Step 2: First business problem I have to solve on Day 1 (pick ONE):
- renting a space I can afford
- buying supplies and equipment
- getting my first 10 customers
- hiring staff
I picked: _____
Step 3: Which business skill (NOT cosmetology skill) do I need to solve that problem? Pick ONE: accounting / marketing / scheduling / inventory / customer service / other: _______
In one sentence, why does THIS skill matter more than the others for my first problem? (d(3)(I))
Differentiation
- Support: Pre-fill the salon concept template with 2 elements as examples. Pre-fill the Get Out and Move plan with 2 activity ideas (obstacle course, group dance) so groups only need to add 3 more.
- Extension: Build a full salon business plan: startup costs, monthly expenses, projected revenue at year 1. Use real DFW-area rent and supply costs.
- ELL: Pre-teach: Salon = Salón, Customer = Cliente, Pledge = Promesa, Wellness = Bienestar. The salon concept and pledge can be in English, Spanish, or bilingual.
