Day 4: Xello Life Experiences + Volunteer Hours

Warm-Up (5 min)

WARM-UP: List one thing you do regularly that nobody pays you for, chores, walking a dog, watching a sibling, helping a neighbor, sports practice. Now: what skill does that activity teach you?

Take 4-5 fast responses. The point: students already have life experiences that will matter to colleges and employers. Today they learn how to log them in Xello so they don't get forgotten.

Activity 1: Xello Life Experiences Lesson (25 min)

Open Xello on the projector. Sign in with the school SSO and walk students through finding the Life Experiences lesson:

  1. From the Xello dashboard, click on the lessons tab
  2. Find "Life Experiences" in the 7th-grade lesson list
  3. Click "Start" or "Continue"

Students complete the Xello Life Experiences lesson on their own Chromebooks. The lesson typically includes:

  • A short video or slide deck explaining what counts as a life experience
  • Examples of life experiences (jobs, sports, hobbies, family responsibilities, volunteer work)
  • Reflection prompts about what each experience teaches

As students work, circulate and check that they are reading and reflecting, not just clicking through. Pause the class once at the midpoint to ask: "What is one experience you wrote down that you almost forgot was important?"

Facilitation Tip

Students often think "experience" means a paid job, so they leave the form blank. Reframe with examples: babysitting a younger sibling = experience with childcare and patience. Walking a neighbor's dog = experience with reliability and animal handling. Helping at family events = experience with hospitality. Every veterinary job application asks about animal handling experience, informal pet care counts.

Activity 2: Xello Volunteer Hours Entry (15 min)

After completing the Life Experiences lesson, students navigate to the Volunteer Hours section in their Xello profile (typically under "About Me" or "My Profile"). They add at least ONE volunteer hours entry. If they have never officially volunteered, they can:

  • Log a recurring family/community responsibility (helping at church, cleaning common areas, helping at family events)
  • Log a one-time school volunteer event (book fair, club setup, school cleanup)
  • Plan a future volunteer activity to log later

Each entry needs: organization name, role, hours, and a 1-2 sentence description of what they did and learned.

[VERIFY IN Xello] Confirm with your district that the Volunteer Hours field is enabled in your school's Xello configuration. If it is not, students complete the Life Experiences lesson only and log volunteer experiences in their notebook for later transfer.

DOK 2: How does logging volunteer hours in middle school help you when you apply to a vet science high school pathway like Nimitz HS in 8th grade?

Activity 3: Connect to Vet Careers (3 min)

Quick whole-class share: which life experience or volunteer activity from today would help on a vet clinic job application? (Examples: pet sitting, animal shelter volunteering, 4-H club, family farm chores, working at a pet store.) Write 2-3 student examples on the board.

Differentiation

  • Support: Provide a printed list of common middle-school life experiences students can choose from if they get stuck thinking of their own.
  • Extension: Plan a real volunteer opportunity in the next two weeks at a local animal shelter, vet clinic, or community garden. Bring back proof to log in Xello.
  • ELL: Pre-teach: Volunteer = Voluntario/a, Experience = Experiencia, Hours = Horas. Xello supports Spanish language toggle, show students how to switch the interface language if needed.
