Day 3: Professional Associations Jigsaw
Lesson Overview
| Time | 50 minutes |
| Objectives | Research one professional association in depth; teach the rest of the class about it; identify which association connects to the student's chosen pathway; note at least one community-service program the association runs |
| TEKS | d(3)(F), d(3)(H), d(4)(E) |
| Deliverable | Team Jigsaw research notes (1 association) + individual association ID for personal pathway |
| Materials | Chromebooks, association websites bookmarked (SkillsUSA, ASE, FAA, TSA, NSPE), printed Jigsaw research template, projector |
Warm-Up (5 min)
WARM-UP: Are you a member of any organization or club. TSA, sports team, scouts, church youth group, online community? What benefits do you get from being a member?
Take 4-5 student responses. Surface the recurring benefits, meeting people, learning skills, getting access to events, feeling like part of something. Bridge: today we are looking at the adult version, professional associations that follow people through their entire careers.
Activity 1: Jigsaw Setup + Team Research (25 min)
Source: Jigsaw research method (IISD instructional strategy)
Assign each team of 4 students one of 5 professional associations:
- Team SkillsUSA: National CTSO for trade, technical, and skilled service careers. Hosts SkillsUSA Championships in welding, automotive, robotics, culinary, cosmetology, and many more. → skillsusa.org
- Team ASE: Automotive Service Excellence. The certification body for automotive technicians. Required for most professional auto and diesel jobs. → ase.com
- Team FAA: Federal Aviation Administration. Issues pilot, ATC, and drone certifications. Hires aviation professionals directly. → faa.gov/jobs
- Team TSA: Technology Student Association. The CTSO for technology and engineering students. Hosts the TSA Drone Challenge that many IISD VILS students compete in. → tsaweb.org
- Team NSPE: National Society of Professional Engineers. Represents licensed Professional Engineers (PEs). → nspe.org
Distribute the printed Jigsaw research template. Each team researches their association and fills in:
| Field | Team Notes |
|---|---|
| Full name and what it stands for | |
| Who can join (students? professionals? both?) | |
| Membership benefits (top 5) | |
| Competitions or events they host | |
| Scholarships available | |
| Industry credentials they offer | |
| One specific Texas chapter or event | |
| Why a CCE student should care (1 sentence) |
Teams divide the work: one student finds membership info, another looks at competitions, another searches for scholarships, another captures the Texas connection. Roles rotate at the 12-minute mark.
Facilitation Tip
The professional association websites are dense and often poorly designed for student readers. Project an example navigation path on the board, for SkillsUSA, the easiest entry is "About → What We Do" rather than the homepage. For ASE, "Take a Test → Test Categories" is the most useful page for students.
Activity 2: Jigsaw Share-Out (15 min)
Each team has 2 minutes to present their association. Format:
- Full name + 1-sentence purpose
- Who can join
- Top 2 membership benefits
- One competition or scholarship
- Why a CCE student should care
5 teams × 2 minutes = 10 minutes + transitions.
The class fills in a quick listening grid: 5 associations × 3 columns (purpose, benefits, who joins).
After all 5 presentations, run a 3-minute discussion: - What do all 5 associations have in common? - Which one feels most connected to your chosen pathway? - Why do employers value membership in these associations? - Which associations run community-service programs, and why would a service project matter to a future employer?
DOK 2: How would you describe the value of joining a professional association while you are still in school? What specific benefits would help you most before high school graduation?
Exit Ticket (5 min)
EXIT TICKET (Comparison Matrix) · Printable PDF:
Use your Day 3 Jigsaw grid to fill in the matrix for 3 of the 5 associations.
| Assoc 1: ___ | Assoc 2: ___ | Assoc 3: ___ | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who can join? (students, pros, or both) | |||
| Top competition or scholarship | |||
| Best fit for MY pathway (YES / NO) |
Bottom line: ONE professional association related to MY chosen pathway:
My association: _____
The specific benefit that matters MOST to me RIGHT NOW (competition / scholarship / networking / credential / community service):
In one sentence, why does THIS benefit fit my current goals BETTER than the other four options? (d(3)(F), d(3)(H), d(4)(E))
Differentiation
- Support: Pre-filled research template with the "Full name" and "Who can join" rows already completed. Pair with a peer for the website navigation. Allow team to research only 4 of the 8 fields if time-constrained.
- Extension: Find one specific upcoming Texas competition for the assigned association (date, location, eligibility, entry fee). Bring it back as a real opportunity for classmates.
- ELL: Bilingual research template with Spanish field labels. Pre-teach: Membership = Membresía, Competition = Competencia, Scholarship = Beca, Credential = Credencial. Allow team presentations to include 1-2 Spanish sentences.
