Warm-Up (5 min)
WARM-UP: If you had to hire someone for a job, what soft skills would you look for? List your top 3.
Take 3-4 responses. Bridge: students will see today that the soft skills they value as "boss" are the same skills they have practiced this week, communication, time management, advocacy.
Activity 1: Xello Time Management Lesson (15 min)
Open Xello and direct students to the Time Management Lesson in the 7th-grade lessons. This activity teaches time management strategies and asks students to apply them to their school week.
Students complete the lesson, take any embedded quizzes, and read their results. They write down:
- One time management strategy they want to try
- One thing in their week that wastes time
The lesson connects directly to d(4)(A): time management is one of the explicit TEKS this week.
Activity 2: CareerOneStop Skills Matcher (15 min)
Open careeronestop.org/Toolkit/Skills/skills-matcher.aspx on the projector. Walk students through how the Skills Matcher works:
- The tool asks you to rate yourself on 40 skills (Active Listening, Critical Thinking, Reading Comprehension, etc.)
- Based on your ratings, it shows careers that match your skill profile
Students complete the Skills Matcher individually. The tool will return a list of careers ranked by skill match.
After completing the matcher, students:
- Take a screenshot of their top 5 career matches
- Compare to their H&L Climber Profile favorites: is there overlap?
- Write one sentence noting whether the Skills Matcher recommended any careers they had NOT considered before
[H&L PLATFORM] Open the H&L app and click "Climber Profile." Compare the list of favorites to the CareerOneStop Skills Matcher results. Look for patterns, same RIASEC type, same skill clusters.
Activity 3: SMART Refinement + Powerskills Reflection (15 min)
Students close the week by bringing the Xello Time Management strategy and the Skills Matcher results back to the SMART goal they drafted on Day 3, and then writing the reflection that is the week's summative. Keep this as one continuous block so students don't lose momentum with another activity handoff.
Part A, Refine the SMART goal (5 min). Students pull out their Day 3 SMART goal and ask three questions:
- Is it still realistic given what I now know about my time?
- Should I narrow or expand it based on my Skills Matcher results?
- Have I committed to a specific action that will actually get me there?
Each student rewrites the goal once if needed and highlights any changes from the Day 3 version.
Part B, Write the reflection (10 min). Students write a 4-sentence paragraph (this is the Week 5 summative):
- "The transferable skill I improved most this week is _____."
- "It connects to the career of _ because ___."
- "This week's biggest aha moment was _____."
- "I will practice this skill outside of class by _____."
Submit the reflection and the refined SMART goal together as the Week 5 deliverable.
DOK 4: If you were training a new employee at a hospital, how would you teach them the communication skills we practiced this week? Design a brief 30-minute training outline.
Exit Ticket (Done as part of reflection)
EXIT TICKET (Concept Map / Connection Diagram) · Printable PDF:
The transferable skill I improved MOST this week: _____ (from Conflict Resolution / Feedback / Advocacy / Written Communication / Time Management)
Connect this skill to THREE things:
1. A career from my CareerOneStop Skills Matcher top 5 that USES this skill
Career: _____. One sentence, how this skill shows up in that career's daily work:
2. My SMART goal from Day 3 (refined today)
Does this skill help me reach my SMART goal? Circle: YES / NO. One sentence why:
3. A CLASSMATE's top skill (trade in the last 2 minutes, must be different from mine)
Classmate's skill: _____. In one sentence, which skill (MINE or CLASSMATE'S) matters more in a high-pressure healthcare job, and why?
(d(1)(A), d(4)(B))
Submit the refined SMART goal with this ticket.
Differentiation
- Support: Provide a fill-in-the-blank reflection template. Use Xello's Spanish-language toggle and CareerOneStop's accessibility features.
- Extension: Students compare their Skills Matcher results to their H&L RIASEC results from Week 0. Where do they overlap, and where do they conflict?
- ELL: CareerOneStop and Xello both support multiple languages. Pair ESL students with bilingual peers for the reflection paragraph. Pre-teach: Reflection = Reflexión, Skill = Habilidad, Goal = Meta, Refine = Refinar.
