Lesson Objective
Students explore the Cybersecurity pathway through Hats & Ladders, complete the H&L "Cybersecurity in Action" Cyber Safety Creator project (Ch 12, pp. 193-195), connect work ethic and integrity to cybersecurity careers, design and laser-cut a college/career logo on the Glowforge to represent their post-secondary goal, and complete a 1st Six Weeks capstone reflection that revisits their Wk0 Career Journey reflection.

Career Connection
Cybersecurity is one of the most critical and fastest-growing career fields in the world. Every company, hospital, school, and government agency needs cybersecurity professionals. In the U.S., there are currently hundreds of thousands of UNFILLED cybersecurity jobs because there are not enough trained professionals, meaning a 7th grader who decides to pursue cybersecurity now will graduate into a wide-open job market. This is also a career where integrity and work ethic are not optional, cybersecurity professionals are trusted with the most sensitive data of millions of people.
What is Happening at Irving ISD? Cybersecurity at Singley Academy leads to the Cybersecurity Fundamentals certification. Singley also offers Networking-related coursework that supports cybersecurity. This is a high-demand, high-wage pathway with strong job security. A student who follows this pathway can earn an industry credential in high school and step into a $50K+ entry-level cybersecurity role.
Vocabulary
- Cybersecurity: The practice of protecting computer systems, networks, and data from digital attacks, theft, and damage.
- Phishing: A type of cyber attack that uses fake emails or websites to trick people into revealing personal information.
- Ethical Hacking: Authorized testing of computer systems to find security vulnerabilities BEFORE malicious hackers find them. Also called penetration testing.
- Information Security Analyst: The most common cybersecurity job title. Monitors a company's networks for threats and responds to attacks.
- Integrity: The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. In cybersecurity, integrity means protecting data and following ethical standards even when no one is watching.
- Postsecondary Education: Education AFTER high school, college, trade school, certifications, military training, apprenticeships.
- Glowforge: A desktop laser cutter that cuts and engraves wood, acrylic, leather, and other materials using SVG vector files.
- SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic): A digital file format made of lines and shapes (not pixels) that the Glowforge can cut.
Bridge to Theory (Hats & Ladders)
The H&L workbook (Ch 12: Information Technology, pp. 193-195) features the Cybersecurity in Action activity (a Career Climb activity, NOT a scenario game). The activity casts students as Cyber Safety Creators with the mission to design a tool that helps kids understand the difference between a safe website and an unsafe website for making online purchases.
The workbook offers three tool options (Ch 12, p. 193):
- A Kid-Friendly Cyber Security Guide: a colorful, engaging guide (paper or digital brochure) with tips for spotting safe websites.
- A Cyber Safety App or System: invent an app or software concept (with a creative name) that helps parents and kids monitor safe internet use.
- A Public Service Announcement: a video script, audio script, or poster explaining how to make wise online purchase decisions.
The activity is a 4-step process: choose a tool, brainstorm and research, design the tool, and get peer feedback using a rubric (Ch 12, p. 195) on Understanding the Problem, Right Information, and Age-Appropriate.
The Glowforge college/career logo project is a teacher-designed extension that connects to TEKS d(3)(A): describing the MS-to-HS transition. Students choose a college, trade school, certification program, or career as their postsecondary goal and laser-cut a representative logo. This becomes a tangible artifact of their first big future-planning decision.
IISD Instructional Strategies
- Think-Pair-Share: After completing the Cyber Safety Creator design, students pair up to discuss what their tool teaches and why integrity is essential when designing tools for vulnerable users.
- Active Monitoring: During Glowforge design and cutting, walk the room to ensure every student is connecting their logo choice to a SPECIFIC postsecondary goal (not just picking a cool image).
- Sentence Stems: "My logo represents _ because I want to after high school. The Irving ISD pathway that prepares me is __."
