Warm-Up (5 min)

WARM-UP: We just spent a week in Hospitality. If you HAD to work in this cluster, which pathway would you pick. Culinary, Lodging, or Tourism? Why?

Take 4 student responses. Validate all answers. Some students discovered they love this cluster; some discovered it's not for them. Both are useful.

Activity 1: Xello Decision Making Lesson (20 min)

Source: Xello 7th-Grade Lesson, "Decision Making"

Open Xello on the projector. Walk students through finding the Decision Making lesson:

  1. From the Xello dashboard, click Lessons
  2. Find "Decision Making" in the 7th-grade lesson list
  3. Click Start or Continue

Students complete the lesson on their own Chromebooks. The lesson typically includes:

  • A framework for making decisions (gather info, weigh options, predict consequences, decide, reflect)
  • Practice scenarios where students apply the framework
  • A reflection on how good decisions matter for career paths

After the lesson, students write one sentence in their notebook applying the decision-making framework to a real career choice:

  • "If I had to decide between [career A] and [career B], I would gather information about _, weigh the options of , and predict that __."

Facilitation Tip

Connect the Xello lesson to this week's activities. The Hotel Rescue activity required real-time decision making with limited info. The Tourism Campaign required choosing 3 attractions out of 6. Career decisions work the same way. Students will face them at the end of 8th grade when they pick their high school pathway.

Activity 2: eDynamic Unit 6.1: Entertaining and Exploring (15 min)

Source: eDynamic Learning. Unit 6.1: Entertaining and Exploring (covers Arts/AV and Hospitality clusters)

Direct students to log into eDynamic and navigate to Unit 6.1: Entertaining and Exploring. This unit reinforces the Hospitality cluster content from this week and previews the Arts/AV cluster (which appears later in the year).

[VERIFY IN eDynamic] Confirm with your district that Unit 6.1 is enabled and accessible to 7th-grade students. Verify the unit covers Hospitality content as expected.

Students work through Unit 6.1 at their own pace for 15 minutes. The goal is meaningful progress, not necessarily completion.

Activity 3: H&L Favorites + Cluster Reflection (8 min)

Source: H&L Workbook Ch 10, Hat Finder favoriting

[H&L PLATFORM] Direct students to the Hat Finder in the H&L app, filter by Hospitality and Tourism cluster, and click the heart/favorite icon on 2-3 careers from this week. The favorited Hats appear in their Climber Profile under "Favorites." The workbook (Ch 10) directs students to "explore and favorite careers across the Hospitality & Tourism cluster."

Students take a screenshot of their Climber Profile favorites screen and save it to Google Drive.

Then they write a 3-sentence reflection on the Hospitality week:

  • Sentence 1: "The most interesting hospitality career I learned about this week is _____."
  • Sentence 2: "The activity I enjoyed most was _ because ___."
  • Sentence 3: "If I owned a small hospitality business, it would be _ (food truck, B&B, event planning company, etc.) because ___."

DOK 3: Looking at the 3 hospitality activities (Culinary Twist, Hotel Rescue, Pack Your Bags), which one required the MOST teamwork? Which required the most individual creativity? Defend your answers with examples.

Exit Ticket (2 min)

EXIT TICKET (Concept Map / Connection Diagram) · Printable PDF:

A Hospitality career I favorited this week: _____

Connect this career to THREE things:

1. Today's Xello Decision Making framework (gather info → weigh options → predict → decide → reflect)

Which step is HARDEST for someone picking my favorited career, and why? One sentence:

2. The Singley Academy Culinary Arts OR Hospitality Services pathway (ServSafe Manager certification)

Does Singley's pathway lead DIRECTLY to my favorited career or is it a STEPPING STONE? Circle: DIRECT / STEPPING STONE. One sentence why:

3. My small-business (entrepreneurship) dream in Hospitality

If I owned a small hospitality business, it would be: _____ (food truck, B&B, event-planning company, etc.). One sentence why:

(d(1)(C), d(3)(I))

Submit Xello screenshot + H&L Favorites screenshot + 3-sentence reflection with this ticket.

Differentiation

  • Support: Sentence stems for the 3-sentence reflection. Pre-fill: "The most interesting career I learned about is _ because it combines and __."
  • Extension: Connect your favorite hospitality career to a real Irving employer (Hilton DFW Lakes, Embassy Suites Las Colinas, Toyota Music Factory venues). What entry-level role would you start in?
  • ELL: Pre-teach: Decision = Decisión, Choice = Elección, Reflect = Reflexionar. Xello and eDynamic both support Spanish, show language toggles if needed.
