Warm-Up (5 min)

WARM-UP: What is a certification? How is it different from a diploma or a degree?

Quick share. Most students will be confused. They think certifications are like school awards. Bridge by clarifying: "A certification is proof you passed a test that an industry trusts. CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft, and Google all give out IT certifications that employers actually look for on resumes."

Activity 1: CompTIA Career Roadmap Exploration (20 min)

Source: CompTIA Career Roadmap, comptia.org/content/it-careers-path-roadmap

Project the CompTIA Career Roadmap on the screen. CompTIA is a nonprofit that issues IT certifications recognized worldwide. Their roadmap shows EVERY major IT certification and which careers each one prepares you for.

Walk through the roadmap with students:

  • Entry level: CompTIA IT Fundamentals (ITF+): for people brand new to IT
  • Foundational (most important): CompTIA A+, the entry-level certification for any IT support job. Covers hardware, software, networking, troubleshooting, and security basics.
  • Specialization: CompTIA Network+ (networking), Security+ (cybersecurity), Server+ (servers), Linux+ (Linux operating system), Cloud+ (cloud computing)
  • Advanced: CompTIA CySA+ (cybersecurity analyst), PenTest+ (ethical hacker), CASP+ (cybersecurity architect)

Tell students that CompTIA A+ is the certification most often listed in entry-level IT job postings. Many people earn it with 2-6 months of self-study and a $200-500 exam fee. Compare that to a 4-year degree at $50,000+.

Students explore the roadmap on their Chromebooks. They identify which certifications connect to the IT support careers they explored on Day 1. They note: certification name, time to earn (research online), cost, and what career it unlocks.

Facilitation Tip

Some students will get overwhelmed by the long list of certifications. Tell them: "You only need to know 3 right now: A+, Network+, and Security+. The other certifications are for advanced specializations, focus on the foundation first."

Activity 2: Education Pathway Comparison Worksheet (20 min)

Distribute the Education Pathway Comparison worksheet. Students compare 3 IT careers side-by-side, picking ONE from each category:

  1. Certification-only career (e.g., Help Desk Technician with CompTIA A+)
  2. Associate degree + cert career (e.g., IT Support Specialist with associate degree + Network+)
  3. Bachelor's degree career (e.g., Software Developer or Network Architect)

For each career, students fill in 5 fields:

Field Career 1 (Cert) Career 2 (AS + Cert) Career 3 (Bachelor's)
Career Name
Required Education
Time to Complete
Estimated Cost (rough)
Median Salary (BLS)

Then students answer 2 reflection questions on the back:

  1. Which path takes the LEAST time? Which path takes the MOST?
  2. If you wanted to start earning money as fast as possible, which path would you choose?

DOK 3: What conclusions can you draw about whether a 4-year degree is always the best choice for someone who wants to work in IT support? Use the cost and time data from your worksheet to support your answer.

Facilitation Tip

Students may try to skip the "cost" field because it feels uncomfortable to discuss money. Push them to put rough numbers: "Certifications: $200-1000. Associate degree: $5,000-15,000 at a community college. Bachelor's: $40,000-100,000+." These numbers should shock them, and that's the point. Education is an investment with a real cost.

Exit Ticket (5 min)

EXIT TICKET (Ranked Justification) · Printable PDF:

Rank these three training paths from FASTEST to EARNING INCOME (1) to SLOWEST (3). Use your Education Pathway Comparison worksheet.

  • CompTIA A+ certification only: rank ____
  • Associate degree + CompTIA Network+: rank ____
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science: rank ____

For EACH rank, write one specific data point (time, cost, or salary) from your worksheet that backs up the rank.

  • Rank 1 (fastest): _____________

  • Rank 2: _____________

  • Rank 3 (slowest): _____________

Bottom line: Which path would you recommend to a student who says "I don't want debt and I want to work ASAP"? One sentence why. (d(2)(A), d(2)(B))

Differentiation

  • Support: Pre-fill one column of the Education Pathway Comparison worksheet (the certification-only career, e.g., Help Desk Technician with A+) as a model. Students complete columns 2 and 3.
  • Extension: Students research the cost of a CompTIA A+ exam voucher and find one free study resource (Professor Messer on YouTube is the standard).
  • ELL: Bilingual worksheet with Spanish column headers. Allow ELL students to use Spanish-language CompTIA roadmap resources (Latin American IT certification sites).
