Warm-Up (5 min)

WARM-UP: After this week, could you see yourself working in the legal field? Why or why not?

Take 3-4 responses. Some students will say "yes" and some "no", both are valid. The point of CCE is making informed choices, not pushing every student toward every career.

Activity 1: Polish + Submit Position Paper (10 min)

Students open their AI Ethics Position Paper draft from Day 4. They polish it using a 4-point checklist projected on the board:

  1. Did I clearly state my position in the first sentence?
  2. Did I include at least one piece of evidence?
  3. Did I name at least one specific legal career?
  4. Did I name at least one professional association?

Students submit the polished paper (digital or paper). This is the summative assessment for Week 1.

Activity 2: H&L Favorites + Climber Profile Update (12 min)

Students return to the H&L app and finalize their Law cluster favorites. They should favorite 2-3 legal or public service careers that they want to remember.

[H&L PLATFORM] In the H&L app, navigate to "Hat Finder," filter by "Law and Public Service" cluster, and click the heart icon on 2-3 Hats to add them to favorites. Then click "Climber Profile" to verify the favorited careers appear there. Students should now have favorites from THREE clusters: Manufacturing, IT, and Law.

The teacher circulates and asks each student: "Which legal career did you favorite, and why?" This is a quick formative check that students engaged with the cluster meaningfully.

Facilitation Tip

Watch for students who favorite a career just because it pays well. Push back: "What about the daily work attracts you?" The Climber Profile is a personal record. Students should be honest, not strategic.

Activity 3: Xello Life Experience Activity (15 min)

Open Xello and direct students to the Life Experience activity in the 7th-grade lessons. This activity asks students to reflect on experiences (volunteering, caring for siblings, sports, jobs around the house) that connect to careers they have explored.

Students complete the activity in Xello and answer the reflection prompts. They look for connections between their lived experiences and the legal careers they explored this week, for example, a student who has resolved sibling arguments has experience with mediation; a student who reads carefully has experience that connects to paralegal work.

After completing the Xello activity, each student writes one sentence in their notebook: "One life experience I have that connects to a legal career is _ because ___."

DOK 3: Think about your finished Position Paper. Which single revision from today would most change how a skeptical reader, someone who disagrees with your position, evaluates your argument? Explain why that revision is more persuasive than the others you made.

Activity 4: eDynamic Unit 5.1 Preview (5 min)

Direct students to eDynamic Learning Unit 5.1: Law & Order. Have them open the unit and read the introduction (5 minutes). This is a preview only. They will not complete the unit today. Tomorrow's class (Wk 2) will pick up first responders, and eDynamic 5.1 supports that content.

[VERIFY IN eDynamic] Confirm the title of Unit 5.1 in eDynamic Learning is "Law & Order" and that it covers law enforcement, courts, and corrections topics suitable for 7th-grade Health Science / Law cluster framing.

Exit Ticket (3 min)

EXIT TICKET (Concept Map / Connection Diagram) · Printable PDF:

The legal career I favorited in H&L this week: _____

Connect this career to THREE things:

1. A professional association this career would join (Texas Bar Association, American Bar Association, NALA for paralegals, NCRA for court reporters, or other)

My association: _____. In one sentence, why would this career join that specific association?

2. One of MY Xello Life Experience connections from today (a real experience I have that connects to legal work)

My experience: _____. In one sentence, how does this experience prepare me for the favorited career?

3. An Irving ISD pathway that connects (Law Enforcement at Singley, Legal Studies at Singley, or another Irving ISD pathway that touches the legal field)

My pathway: _____. In one sentence, does the Irving ISD pathway lead DIRECTLY to my favorited career, or is it a STEPPING STONE? Explain.

Differentiation

  • Support: Provide a sentence-completion handout for the Xello reflection: "A life experience I have is _. This connects to the career of because __."
  • Extension: Students draft a 4-year high school plan for the Singley Academy Law Enforcement pathway, listing the courses they would take in 9th-12th grade.
  • ELL: Pair ESL students with bilingual peers for the Xello Life Experience. Pre-teach: Experience = Experiencia, Volunteer = Voluntario, Skill = Habilidad. Xello has built-in Spanish translation for activity prompts.
