Weekly outcome

Students compare Electricians; Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters; HVAC Mechanics and Installers; and Welders using one dated national evidence basis. They then apply careful written communication to four fictional HVAC service tickets and clear team communication to a fictional water-line response.

Learning target: I can compare four skilled-trades careers, explain the preparation or state credential boundary for each, classify the careers with published evidence, and communicate what the evidence supports without pretending I am licensed to diagnose or repair a real system.

Evidence students create

  • four-career preparation and labor-evidence record;
  • four HVAC evidence-first field notes;
  • four-career classification and limitation;
  • two current route decisions with exact verification steps;
  • fictional plumbing-response plan and individual 30–45 second briefing.

Only the Day 3 classification and Day 5 individual response are scored together as Major 1. Days 1, 2, and 4 are formative practice; teachers may review them in Canvas or on paper without creating three additional grades.

TEKS alignment

  • d(1)(C): identify skilled-trades career opportunities (Days 1 and 5);
  • d(2)(A): describe preparation, training, certification, registration, and license boundaries (Days 1 and 4);
  • d(3)(G): investigate steps to enter two current postsecondary or apprenticeship routes (Day 4);
  • d(4)(B): apply written communication and explain how it transfers to another career (Day 2);
  • d(4)(C): deliver an individual professional briefing with an appropriate technology support: the companion/evidence card for live or teacher-conference delivery, private audio/video, or an AAC/speech-generating device (Day 5). A written plan or transcript may support access but does not by itself demonstrate oral evidence;
  • d(5)(A), d(5)(B): analyze and classify four occupations using dated, comparable evidence and a transparent classroom rule (Day 3).

Evidence rules

The scored comparison uses May 2024 U.S. BLS medians and 2024–34 national projections. It does not mix national median, DFW starting pay, live postings, and top-earner figures in one table. Xello may supply a separately labeled local cross-check when occupation, geography, measure, and date are visible. H&L remains optional exploration.

For this classroom comparison:

  • high wage means above the May 2024 U.S. all-occupation median of $49,500;
  • high demand means projected growth above the all-occupation comparison rate of 3.1%;
  • high skill means the occupation commonly requires documented technical training, a Registered Apprenticeship, or a state credential/registration path to perform core work independently.

These are transparent course rules, not official BLS, TWC, or employer labels. Annual openings are reported separately and do not prove a DFW worker shortage.

Current district and state boundaries

MacArthur currently lists Welding and Construction within the School of Architecture, Construction and Civil Engineering. The 2026–27 district coursebook, rather than the older workbook snapshot, controls current pathway, course, certification, and CTSO wording. HVAC, electrical, and plumbing are career-exploration topics unless a current district source confirms a local program.

Texas does not use one universal apprentice → journeyworker → master ladder for all four careers. Electrician licensing is regulated by TDLR; plumbing licenses and apprentice registration are regulated by TSBPE; HVAC technicians and contractors have separate TDLR registration, certification, supervision, and contractor rules; welding has technical training and employer/industry credentials but no single universal Texas welding license.

Safety and professional boundary

The HVAC tickets and plumbing response are fictional classroom evidence exercises. Students do not inspect, open, energize, shut down, diagnose, repair, excavate, mark utilities, direct traffic, or operate any real system. Their job is to record visible or supplied evidence, state what it could support, name what it cannot prove, and route the next check to a qualified adult or licensed professional.

Assessment recommendation

Days 1, 2, and 4 are formative. Day 3 classification and Day 5 individual plan/briefing combine as Major 1 in the 5SW assessment map. Group attendance, drawing polish, platform access, and public-speaking confidence do not determine mastery.
