Lesson Objective
Students use the Find Your Future Transportation Survey Project, a dated FAA/BLS aviation evidence guide, and a classroom airport-operations simulation to study aviation careers and preparation routes. They design a useful transportation survey, compare civilian and military pilot preparation without treating either as a guaranteed route, map an airport, test a simple communication protocol, and write an individual route-and-action plan.
Learning Target: I can identify aviation careers, compare preparation routes with current evidence, and use a timed plan to improve a team airport-operations test.
Success Criteria: I will know I am successful when my team survey has 7 multiple-choice questions, 3 short-answer questions, a hypothetical incentive, a campaign choice, and a visible revision; my individual career evidence keeps the source and pay label; my team's airport map passes the design checks; my run log records three tests and revisions; and my individual plan names a route, three timed actions, a backup, and one fact to verify.

- Classroom aircraft tokens: LEGO pieces, counters, sticky notes, or paper markers
- One route per team: LEGO/baseplate, paper and markers, or the district-enabled Lucid whiteboard integration
- Four-page Aviation Route and Action Plan started Day 2 and finished Day 5, plus student-visible rubric
- Optional licensed extension: FYF pp. 160-165 and Climber Notes, Flight Line Fixers, slides 2-6
Source Boundaries
- Current national wage, preparation, and outlook facts come from dated BLS/FAA evidence cards. A BLS median is not DFW starting pay.
- H&L may support an optional cluster browse when the live Hat exists. It is not the source of record for career pay or route requirements.
- Xello Jobs and Employers is supplemental and is not a Bowie Grade 8 completion standard.
- eDynamic 2.2 is supplemental until the unit title and access are verified. The CCE action-plan packet carries the required goal-setting and time-management evidence.
- The simplified radio calls and runway spacing in the lab are classroom rules. They are not FAA phraseology, separation standards, or operational training.
Career and Local Connection
The week compares commercial pilot, air traffic controller, and aircraft maintenance roles. The current Irving ISD CTE page lists Aviation Maintenance and Drone Engineering in Irving High School's School of Aviation Science. It also lists Marine JROTC at Irving High. JROTC is a leadership and citizenship option, not pilot training and not a service commitment. Students verify current course access, prerequisites, and capacity with the coursebook and counselor before treating any local option as available to them.
The workbook's district page says Aviation students use two full-motion flight simulators. Present that as workbook context, not a promise that every student will use a simulator. The workbook also pairs an automotive certification with this cluster; do not use that credential as aviation-pathway evidence. Current district sources and coordinator confirmation control.
Workbook Grounding
- Transportation Survey Project (FYF pp. 166-167) is the Day 1 spine. Teams act as Transportation Needs Analysts, discuss a fictional community need, design a 10-question survey, propose a hypothetical incentive, and choose the Step 4 campaign format. Accountable jobs keep the group work teachable; the Canvas Quiz supplies each student's quality and career evidence.
- Flight Line Fixers (FYF pp. 160-165) remains an optional Day 2 extension. The Climber deck provides five aircraft photos. Students observe rather than diagnose. A photo with no visible flag does not prove an aircraft is safe, and a middle-school classroom decision never replaces an authorized inspection or the actual Minimum Equipment List process.
- District pages and App Exploration (FYF pp. 168-170) provide the local Aviation Maintenance context and optional H&L route.

Assessment Map
- Formative: Day 1 survey quality check; Day 3 design checkpoint; Day 4 run log and communication check.
- Minor 1: Aviation Route and Action Plan, 16-point evidence profile converted to the existing 100-point assignment in Minor Assessments (40%). It combines the Day 2 source-based route decision with the Day 5 individual plan and remains unpublished for teacher cloning.
- Not separately graded: H&L clicks, optional Xello/eDynamic work, LEGO quality, acting confidence, and team presentation.
The four rubric criteria are source accuracy, route reasoning, timed action plan, and support/backup/revision. Score content and evidence, not accent, public speaking, family military experience, drawing skill, construction material, or English mechanics unless meaning is unclear.
Teacher Readiness and Safety
- Select the build route before class. Do not require every campus to have LEGO.
- Preload one model airport map and the one-page scenario set. Student pages carry the complete absence route.
- Keep the military comparison neutral. Students do not share family service history and are never pushed toward or away from service.
- Do not collect real community survey responses, names, addresses, schedules, or contact information. The survey remains a fictional design task.
- No student operates aircraft or drones. This week uses paper, digital, or tabletop models only.
- Keep team demonstrations brief and optional. The private individual plan is the durable evidence.
Evidence-Based Supports
- Fixed career cards remove dense open-web navigation.
- Each prompt has space matched to its writing job; typed, speech-to-text, media, and paper routes answer the same criteria.
- Vocabulary labels may include Spanish support: aviation = aviación, runway = pista, route = ruta, preparation = preparación, verify = verificar, backup = alternativa.
- Students may use a non-speaking simulation role and submit the same individual reasoning.
- A missing partner, platform, or building material never blocks the individual evidence route.
Optional Extensions
- Complete Flight Line Fixers with the locked Climber images and teacher key.
- Browse the H&L Transportation cluster if the named live Hats resolve.
- Open Xello Jobs and Employers or eDynamic goal setting only after core evidence is complete; label both supplemental.
