Lesson Overview
| Time | 50 minutes |
| Objective | Demonstrate goal-setting strategies by saving two goals with a timeframe, next task, obstacle, and backup plan |
| TEKS | d(4)(A) |
| Deliverable | Two saved Xello goals + private Goal Check and Reflection |
| Materials | FYF p. 146; Xello; Goal Check and Private Reflection; locked Xello Set Goals educator guide |
Before Class
Provide one district device per student. Default print count is 0. Post the one-page Goal Check digitally; print one copy per student only for the paper-planning or outage route. Test ClassLink and Xello, open the Completion Standards report, and open the private reflection assignment. Keep work individual and private.
Use this privacy-safe fictional model: "By October 1, I will finish one career-interview question list. My next task is to write five questions by Friday. If I cannot meet the worker, I will use a teacher-approved career profile and revise the interview plan."
Warm-Up (5 min)
WARM-UP: What makes a goal easier to act on when a plan changes?
Collect ideas such as a next task, timeframe, check-in point, obstacle, and backup plan.
Activity 1: Adaptability to Goal Planning (8 min)
Use the delayed-concert problem on FYF p. 146 as a short model. Students do not need to complete the full workbook activity. Ask what the event planner can control, what changed, and what backup action could keep the goal moving.
Then model one goal with:
- a clear statement;
- a timeframe or check-in date;
- one task; and
- one obstacle with a backup plan.
Students draft two private goal ideas on the one-page check. They write the full goal statements in Xello instead of copying the same form twice. Do not require students to share personal goals with classmates.
Activity 2: Required Xello Set Goals (20 min)
District completion standard: Set goals, 20 minutes, add at least two goals.
Navigation:
- Open Xello from district single sign-on.
- Open About Me, then Goals.
- Choose Set a goal.
- Add Goal 1 with its category, timeframe, and at least one task.
- Add Goal 2 the same way.
- Confirm both goals appear in the plan.
The licensed Xello educator guide is a 25-30 minute extended lesson and asks students to save three goals. It is useful for teacher modeling, but the live district minimum of two goals controls this class period.
Teachers verify completion through the Xello Completion Standards report. Do not require screenshots of personal profiles or goals.
Activity 3: Private Reflection (12 min)
Students identify which goal has the clearest next task and which may need revision after the first attempt. They explain the difference privately. The obstacle and backup-plan fields show how they will keep moving if the first plan changes.
Use the complete frame beside the private reflection: “If _ gets in the way, I will _ so I can keep moving toward ____.”
Completion Check and Reset (5 min)
Students submit the private reflection in Canvas or on paper. The teacher records Xello completion separately.
Supports and Fallbacks
- Support: Draft goals on paper before opening Xello and conference privately on one goal.
- Extension: Add a third goal or a second task only after the two required goals are complete.
- Language: Use goal, timeframe, next task, obstacle, and backup plan as the word bank. Keep the complete backup-plan frame beside the private response.
- Platform failure: Submit the paper plan and schedule supervised Xello catch-up. Paper does not replace the required platform completion.
- Absence: Complete the Student Guide and planning sheet, then finish Set goals during supervised catch-up.
Monitor, Pivot, and Trim
- By minute 13, each student should be in About Me > Goals or have a named access barrier. If several students remain on Home, pause for one ClassLink/navigation reset.
- By minute 29, each student should have saved Goal 1 and started Goal 2, or be on the documented paper/catch-up route.
- By minute 45, two saved goals should appear in the Completion Standards report and the private reflection should be submitted or collected.
- If time is short, reduce the adaptability bridge to one control/change/backup example. Protect the 20-minute Xello minimum, private reflection, and report/catch-up record.
