Before Class

Post the two-page guide and open the unpublished, 0-point PRACTICE: Sustainable Career Match assignment. The default digital route uses zero prints. For a no-device class, print one guide per student, double-sided, and collect that guide instead of requiring a Canvas copy. Project this supplied model: Agricultural Engineer should lead because the worker designs farm systems and monitoring equipment; Wind Turbine Technician is weaker because turbine repair does not address crop monitoring; a typical entry route is a bachelor's degree.

Warm-Up (5 min)

WARM-UP: Choose one shared resource: water, food, energy, or clean air. What problem could make that resource harder to use?

Collect two or three examples. Keep the problem attached to the resource instead of turning the opening into a list of job titles.

Activity 1: Read the Career Evidence (10 min)

Use the first page of the career guide. Students compare Environmental Engineer, Agricultural Engineer, Wind Turbine Service Technician, and Solar Photovoltaic Installer.

Model how to read one row:

  • the task describes the work;
  • common preparation describes a typical route, not the only route;
  • median pay is not beginning pay; and
  • growth percentage and annual openings answer different questions.

Active Monitoring: Check that students keep "May 2024 U.S. median" attached to salary figures. Correct any note that relabels a national median as DFW or starting pay.

Activity 2: Water-Stressed Crops (20 min)

Read the second-page problem brief. NASA explains that soil moisture can help detect drought. USDA describes drones as useful scouting and monitoring tools while also naming cost, calibration, accuracy, and profitability limits.

Students choose the best lead career and write:

  1. one task that fits the problem;
  2. one reason another career is a weaker lead; and
  3. one current fact about opportunity or preparation.

Use the complete frame at the response: “The _ should lead because this worker . A weaker lead is _ because . One current fact is ____.”

The expected lead is Agricultural Engineer when the justification connects farm systems, irrigation, equipment, or monitoring to the crop problem. Environmental Engineer can also earn credit when a student builds a clear water-system argument. Do not score career preference.

Activity 3: Compare and Defend (10 min)

Use Think-Pair-Share. Students compare answers with a partner, revise one line, and identify one evidence limit.

Prompt: "What does your evidence support, and what does it not prove?"

Listen for the distinction between investigating a career and guaranteeing a job or salary.

Exit Check (5 min)

Students type the four-part response in the private Canvas practice check or upload/submit the completed guide. They do not complete both routes.

DOK 3: Which matters more for this problem, career growth or the worker's actual task? Defend the choice with one fact.

Supports and Fallbacks

  • Support: Highlight the task column and allow students to choose between only Environmental Engineer and Agricultural Engineer before comparing all four.
  • Extension: Compare the two technical occupations. Explain why faster growth does not automatically mean more annual openings.
  • Language: Use task, preparation, median, projection, and evidence limit as the word bank. Keep the complete frame beside the response rather than only in the support section.
  • Platform fallback: H&L is optional. The fixed guide carries all required evidence.
  • Absence: Complete both pages of the guide independently and submit through the same private check or give the paper guide to the teacher.

Monitor, Pivot, and Trim

  • By minute 13, each student should select a worker task before looking at pay. If several students choose only by salary or growth, compare one task row to one data row.
  • By minute 33, each response should have a lead, matching task, weaker comparison, and current fact. Correct every DFW-starting-pay relabel.
  • If time is short, cut the partner share. Protect the individual response and seven-minute submit/reset window.
