Daily Learning Contract
- Topic: Career Bias
- Objective: Students will revisit an assumption about emerging or nontraditional career work and evaluate it with one career fact.
- TEKS: d(1)(D)
- Demonstration of Learning: Xello Completion Standards record plus a private assumption-evidence-action reflection.
| Time | 50 minutes |
| Xello completion standard | Biases and career choices lesson, 30 minutes, lesson completed |
| TEKS | d(1)(D) |
| Evidence | Xello Completion Standards report plus private career-assumption reflection |
Required-versus-extended boundary
The licensed Xello facilitator package is an 80-minute sequence:
- Career Trailblazers - 30 minutes
- Xello Biases and career choices - 30 minutes
- Non-traditional Career Matches - 20 minutes
The district-assigned Grade 8 task is Activity 2 only. It has no prerequisite. Activity 3 recommends Matchmaker and asks students to revisit a discounted career; it is an optional extension, not today's completion minimum. Work experiences was completed in the prior week and is not repeated.
Before class
- Give each student one district device and headphones if the Xello lesson uses audio.
- Check the Completion Standards report and test ClassLink.
- Project the corrected warm-up and navigation from the Canvas Student Guide.
- Keep the original seven-slide Xello template in the locked teacher folder for reference. Its Google sign-in slide does not match Irving ClassLink, and its first exit question is unrelated to this lesson; do not project slides 5 or 7.
- Post the one-page private reflection and private Canvas assignment. Default print count is 0; print one copy per student only for the paper route.
- Keep all work individual/private. Public sharing is optional.
- Keep the full facilitator guide and two extension handouts in the locked teacher resource folder.
50-minute flow
| Time | Work |
|---|---|
| 5 | Private warm-up: Where do career assumptions come from? |
| 30 | ClassLink > Xello > Home > Lessons > Biases and career choices |
| 12 | Private reflection: assumption, one career fact, one fair next move |
| 3 | Check the report or record supervised catch-up |
Privacy and facilitation
Students may use an assumption from media, school, or general culture. They are not required to disclose identity, family income, disability, or a personal experience with discrimination. Public discussion is optional; the evidence is private. Do not require a profile screenshot.
The reflection asks students to:
- Name one career assumption.
- Use one Plant-Tech Guide or Xello career-profile fact to challenge, complicate, or confirm it.
- Explain one fair investigation strategy before ruling a career in or out.
The private evidence check reinforces d(1)(D); Xello is today's completion-standard carrier rather than a new primary TEKS artifact.
Monitor, pivot, and trim
- Use a private Stop and Jot, then Active Monitor navigation without reading student answers.
- By minute 8, every student should be in Biases and career choices or have a named access barrier. If several students remain on Home, pause for one ClassLink/navigation reset.
- By minute 35, record lesson completion or a supervised catch-up route.
- If time is short, cut public sharing and optional extensions. Protect the 30-minute Xello lesson, report/catch-up record, and private reflection.
Supports and fallback
Read prompts aloud, provide bilingual labels, and allow a private teacher conference. If Xello fails, students complete the reflection with the fixed Plant-Tech Guide and move the required lesson to supervised catch-up. Paper does not count as Xello completion.
