Lesson Objective
Students compare three biomedical careers using dated evidence, write a practice cover letter for a fictional lab job, design a medical nanobot in the workbook's future-technology scenario, investigate a fictional waterborne outbreak, and complete Xello's required Explore career matches lesson.
Learning Target: I can use career evidence, design choices, outbreak clues, and my Xello results to explain how biomedical workers solve health problems.
Success Criteria: I will know I am successful when I cite one dated career fact, answer a fictional job posting in a five-part letter, label a nanobot design, support an outbreak claim with at least three clues, separate immediate action from prevention, and explain what I learned from one Xello career match.

Career and District Connection
Bioengineers and biomedical engineers design equipment, devices, computer systems, and software. Epidemiologists investigate patterns and causes of disease and injury. Medical scientists conduct research aimed at improving human health. The career guide uses one consistent evidence basis: May 2024 U.S. median wages and 2024-34 national projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These figures are not starting salaries or DFW-local wages.
Irving ISD's current public CTE site lists Biomedical Science at Irving High School. The workbook pages provide additional historical program context. Do not promise a particular certification, course sequence, clinical experience, or campus opportunity unless the district has confirmed it for the current year.
Source and Platform Roles
- Find Your Future: supplies the Mini Medics and Outbreak Investigators scenarios and the district-context pages.
- Xello: supplies the required Grade 8 Explore career matches lesson. The district minimum is 35 minutes. Students need Matchmaker complete and at least three saved careers before class.
- Hats & Ladders: remains an optional live browse or rating route. Exact Hat titles and salary fields are not required evidence this week.
- BLS: supplies the fixed national career evidence. Xello may be used for localized follow-up only when geography, date, and measure are visible.
- CDC: offers optional outbreak-investigation enrichment. The workbook case remains the required classroom source.
Xello Resource Package
The locked Canvas teacher guide includes the official Xello facilitator guide, Irving-adapted slide deck, one-page student directions, and the official student-facing career-matches video. The full Xello resource suggests a broader 120-minute lesson. This course protects the district's 35-minute Explore career matches completion minimum on Day 5 and uses the reflection as the discussion record.
Assessment and Grading
Week 6 is a formative synthesis and conference week. It does not add a fourth minor or a third major to the 2SW grade map.

Days 1-5 produce portfolio evidence and reteach data. Do not grade drawing skill, public speaking, platform access, Xello match rank, handwriting, or English mechanics unless meaning is unclear. A required Xello completion that is blocked by access moves to supervised catch-up; a paper reflection does not replace the platform lesson.
Vocabulary
- Biomedical Engineering: Using engineering and science to design equipment, devices, computer systems, or software that solve health problems.
- Epidemiologist: A public-health worker who investigates patterns and causes of disease and injury.
- Medical Scientist: A scientist who conducts research aimed at improving human health.
- Median Wage: The wage where half of workers earn more and half earn less.
- Outbreak: More cases of an illness than expected in a place or group.
- Exposure: Contact with a possible source of illness.
- Prevention: A system change meant to reduce the chance of a future problem.
- Cover Letter: A short business letter that connects honest evidence about the applicant to a specific job posting.
IISD Instructional Strategies
- Think-Pair-Share: Day 3, Activity 2, students compare sick and healthy residents. Give 30 seconds of silent think time, then Partner A and Partner B each get 30 seconds with the stems "The sick residents share _" and "The residents who stayed healthy share ___." Listen for attention to both exposure and outcome. If pairs ignore the healthy comparison group, point them to those rows before they write a claim.
- Stop and Jot: Day 1, Activity 1, students answer which career has the highest median, fastest growth, and most annual openings. Require one sentence explaining why the answers differ. Scan for students treating median as starting pay. If that appears, reteach the median definition before the cover-letter task.
- Active Monitoring: Day 4, Activities 1 and 2, use four short laps. Check the source claim, the confirming test, the population-based impact estimate, and the immediate-versus-prevention distinction. If several groups check every action without reasons, stop and model one evidence-to-action sentence.
- Chunking: Day 2, Activity 2, release the design in three chunks: plan, draw and label, then map the journey. Teams clear the size, safety, guidance, and signal check before drawing. If teams stall on decoration, redirect them to the mission checklist before providing more time.
- Time, Voice, Body (TVB): Day 2, Activity 2, use Voice 1 for design talk and Voice 0 for the final label check. Keep materials at each table and chart paper flat on desks. Display the countdown for each chunk. If material movement costs build time, switch the class to the equal plain-paper route.

Access and Participation
- Keep required steps visible in Canvas. Put models, vocabulary, and extensions in optional disclosures.
- Embed the needed licensed workbook crops beside each activity so an absent student is not hunting through Files.
- Read the outbreak case aloud and provide the case table visually. Allow keyboard entry, speech-to-text, labeled sketches, and teacher scribing when documented.
- Students may complete the design independently or with a partner. No public presentation is required for full credit.
- Use bilingual labels, glossaries, and sentence frames. Do not require a full translation of every page.
- The Xello reflection is private. Do not require students to post career-assessment results in a discussion.
- FYF is the default student work surface on Days 2-4. The separate two-page records are no-workbook, absence, or extended-reasoning routes, not automatic class sets.
Optional Extensions
- Use the workbook's Patient Education activity with Canva or Adobe Express, both district-approved generative tools. Students compare the generated image with a trusted anatomy source and identify one accurate feature and one problem.
- Use CDC NERD Academy's outbreak-investigation materials for a longer science connection.
- Use a live H&L browse to compare an available Health Science Hat with the fixed career card. Treat H&L data as supplemental unless its date, geography, and measure are visible.
