  • Objective: Students will add one authentic Work experience in Xello, analyze Skills Matcher suggestions, and revise a goal using transferable-skill evidence.
  • TEKS: d(4)(A), d(4)(B); d(1)(A) supporting evidence
  • Demonstration of Learning: Submitted Communication and Goal Synthesis scored with the 16-point rubric.

Lesson overview

Time 50 minutes
Target Add one authentic Work experience in Xello, analyze Skills Matcher suggestions, and revise a goal using transferable-skill evidence
TEKS d(4)(A), d(4)(B); d(1)(A) supporting evidence
Evidence Unpublished Canvas Minor by default; two-page paper fallback and 16-point rubric
Platforms Required: Xello Work experiences. Supplemental: CareerOneStop Skills Matcher. Optional extension: Xello Time management.

Before class

  • Provide one internet-connected device per student, one teacher device with Xello Completion Standards open, and one teacher display for Skills Matcher chunk checkpoints.
  • Test ClassLink to Xello and the CareerOneStop Skills Matcher on a student Chromebook.
  • Open Xello Completion Standards so you can verify Work experiences.
  • Post the licensed Xello My experiences guide in locked Canvas. The broader guide asks students to add three experiences; the Bowie Grade 8 completion minimum for this task is one Work experience.
  • Open the unpublished MINOR 3: Communication and Goal Synthesis. Print the two-page synthesis only for assigned paper students: one double-sided copy per assigned student; default copies: 0.
  • Remind students to retrieve the CCE Six-Weeks Evidence Log from the CCE binder or teacher-designated digital folder named in Week 0. The log stays with the student and is not part of the Minor submission.
  • Do not require a screenshot of personal results.

Lesson flow

1. Warm-up (4 min)

Students list one real responsibility they have handled at school, home, in a club, through volunteering, or through paid/unpaid work. Listing a responsibility does not automatically mean it belongs in the Xello Work category; students use the platform's category and teacher guidance.

2. Required Xello Work experiences (10 min)

Students open ClassLink → Xello → About Me → Experiences → Work, add at least one experience that actually happened, and save.

Students do not invent an experience or enter client names, medical details, contact information, or public links. If a student has no qualifying experience, record catch-up and use the sample responsibility on the synthesis sheet. Paper work supports learning but does not replace the required save.

3. CareerOneStop Skills Matcher (18 min)

Students rate all 40 skill and knowledge areas using the tool's anchor statements. Pause after ratings 10, 20, and 30 for a progress check. They record two career suggestions and one pattern or surprise. Results are idea-generators based on self-ratings, not a verdict about identity or fit.

No screenshot is required. A teacher glance at the results screen or the private written capture is enough.

4. Private synthesis (13 min)

Students revise the Day 3 goal, name the time block and backup strategy, cite two Week 5 activities that show one Powerskill, and compare that skill across two careers. They may discuss one non-sensitive pattern with a partner, confer with the teacher, or keep the analysis private in writing.

Use the rubric's four criteria. This is the approved third minor in the 2SW assessment map; the cloning teacher controls publication and dates.

5. Submit, verify, or record catch-up (5 min)

Students check all four Done when boxes. Teachers record Xello completion from the report and keep absent/no-access students on the supervised catch-up list.

During this same 5-minute check, students keep the completed Communication and Goal Synthesis open and spend 2 to 3 minutes on Entry 2 of the CCE Six-Weeks Evidence Log. They copy short phrases for: Communication and Goal Synthesis; the transferable communication skill already named; one visible action from a Week 5 example; the backup strategy as the revision or recovery move; and the evidence-based next action. Students return the log to the CCE binder or teacher-designated digital folder. Do not collect, upload, or grade the log as another assignment.

If the log is missing, students write the same five short phrases under Entry 2 hold in the CCE notebook or teacher-designated digital folder. They transfer those phrases later from the hold note. They do not reconstruct old work or submit the synthesis again.

Trim: if Skills Matcher is not complete at minute 32, stop after the current chunk and use the fixed IT support specialist and dental assistant pair supplied in the Student Guide and paper route. Record Skills Matcher as incomplete; do not mislabel it as completed. Protect the required Xello save, synthesis, and submission check.

Active monitoring move

  • Minute 14 CFU: Work experience is saved or supervised catch-up is recorded privately.
  • Skills Matcher checkpoints: check progress after ratings 10, 20, and 30; read anchors aloud in chunks when students are clicking without reading.
  • Synthesis lap: check one revised goal, one protected time block, one backup, two Week 5 activity examples, and one communication skill across two careers. If students copy a career title without an action, use “What does the worker do with the skill?” During the submit/check block, verify that five short Entry 2 phrases move into the student-owned log or an Entry 2 hold note. Do not collect the log.

Supports and fallbacks

  • If CareerOneStop is blocked, students use the fixed IT support specialist and dental assistant pair supplied in the Student Guide and paper route. They compare the same transferable skill and do not pretend the Skills Matcher was completed.
  • If Xello is blocked, students complete the reflection now and finish the required save during supervised catch-up.
  • If the Evidence Log is missing, students copy five short phrases from the open synthesis into an Entry 2 hold note in the CCE notebook or teacher-designated digital folder, then transfer the phrases later. They do not reconstruct or upload old work.
  • Place these frames beside the response: “I used _ when I .” “The suggestions share _ because I rated as important.” “In _, the worker uses _ when ____.” Word bank: experience = experiencia; responsibility = responsabilidad; suggestion = sugerencia; transferable = transferible.
  • Xello Time management remains an optional extension because it is not assigned in the Grade 8 completion configuration.
