Warm-Up (5 min)
WARM-UP: Name a product you used this morning (phone, toothbrush, shoes, breakfast cereal). How do you think it was made? Who made it?
Quick share-out. Listen for students saying "a machine" or "a factory." Bridge: "Yes, a machine made it, but who designed and built and runs that machine? That is what Manufacturing is. This week we meet those people."
Activity 1: Xello What is CTE? (10 min)

Students open Xello through ClassLink and locate What is CTE? in their assigned work. The district custom task requires a text response or file submission. Preview the current prompt before class and show students where the response is submitted. Do not substitute a different Xello lesson or treat opening the task as completion.
Use the Completion Standards report to verify the submission. If the current prompt needs more than ten minutes, students finish it during supervised catch-up; do not take time from Matchmaker on Day 5.
Activity 2: Exploring the World of Manufacturing (15 min)

Open the workbook to page 199. Read the chapter opener together (about how welders, machinists, and industrial technicians build, repair, test, and improve everything from vehicles and machines to tools and equipment, and how teams keep production moving safely and accurately). Point to the three Hats printed on the opener page: Automation Specialist, Mechatronics Technician, and Welder. Ask the page's closing question: what problems do you think these workers solve during a normal workday?
The chapter does not print a pathway list. Walk through the six Manufacturing pathways students will find in the Hats & Ladders app under Pathway Possibilities, which they open in Activity 2:
- Robotics and Automation Technology: Build, fix, and operate robots and machines used in things like deep-sea exploration or cleaning up waste.
- Industrial Maintenance: Fix and care for machines in factories and buildings using welding, plumbing, and electrical skills.
- Manufacturing Technology: Use machines, plastic, make parts, and fix equipment.
- Electronics Technology: Learn how electricity works and how to fix electrical systems including circuits and wiring.
- Welding: Work with metal and plastic to join parts together using heat (welding, cutting).
- Advanced Manufacturing & Industrial Technology: Work with high-tech equipment like CNC machines, robots, and computers to shape metal.
The current Irving ISD site names Robotic Manufacturing in Singley Academy's School of Innovative Technology. The district-customized workbook pages identify the FANUC Robot Operator 1 certification and related equipment and experiences (FYF pp. 210-211). Teach those details as FYF curriculum content and keep the source attached to the claim.
Be the Decision Maker (FYF p. 199): Read the opener's boxed prompt aloud. A welder is helping build a rocket launch platform before an important space mission. The team can slow down and double-check every weld, or keep moving quickly to finish on schedule. What would you choose, and how would you explain that decision to the team?
Think-Pair-Share: 30 seconds of silent Think, then Partner A for 30 seconds, then Partner B for 30 seconds. Post two stems so every pair has a way in: "I would _ because " and "Slowing down costs the team __, but a bad weld costs _____." Call on two pairs to share, chosen from what you heard while circulating rather than from raised hands. Listen for students naming a consequence bigger than the schedule.
Facilitation Tip
Most students think "manufacturing = factory worker" and stop there. Push them: "Who designed the assembly line? Who programs the robots? Who tests the products before they ship? Who manages the factory floor?" Each of these is a separate Hat.

If a teacher read-aloud of the six pathways lands flat, swap it for a Jigsaw: assign one pathway per table group, give expert groups 6 minutes to prep 2 to 3 key points, then re-sort into home groups of 6 for peer teaching. See Facilitation Strategies.
Activity 3: H&L Manufacturing Cluster App Exploration with Stop and Jot (15 min)

[H&L PLATFORM] The App Exploration page walks students through the cluster in order: open Hats & Ladders, go to the Manufacturing cluster, use the available cluster tour and Game Time, find one Hat that fits and one that does not, and review Pathway Possibilities. Use the current in-app labels. When students record a local salary, they copy the displayed career, geography, measure, and date viewed so the H&L figure remains tied to its source.
Stop and Jot procedure: While watching the cluster tour video, students pause TWICE in their established CCE notebook (OneNote, physical notebook, Canvas, or teacher-designated paper equivalent; dated entry labeled "1SW Wk1 Manufacturing") to write:
- Stop 1: One new career you learned about in this video
- Stop 2: One question you still have about manufacturing
After the video, students work the rest of the App Exploration page and browse Hats. In the same CCE notebook entry, they write down:
- One Hat (career) within the pathway that interests them
- The education or training required for that Hat
- One detail that surprised them (salary, daily task, training time)
Walk the room and check that students are actually exploring rather than scrolling past. Stop and ask: "Tell me one career you found." If they cannot answer, sit with them and walk through the Hat Finder together.

Differentiation
- Support: Pre-print the 6 Manufacturing pathways with one example Hat per pathway so students can match instead of generate, plus a Stop and Jot template with sentence stems: "One new career I learned about is _. One question I have is ___." Both are on one sheet: Printable PDF.
- Extension: Students who finish the Hat Finder exploration early compare one current H&L description with the same occupation in BLS or CareerOneStop and record one similarity or difference.
- ELL: Use H&L's browser translation. Pre-teach: Pathway = Trayectoria, Robot = Robot, Welder = Soldador, Maintenance = Mantenimiento, Electronics = Electrónica.
