Microcontroller Design

You will create a working device controlled by a microcontroller and demonstrate what it does.

Building a working deviceDocumenting code and designDemonstrating the device

What you make or do

  • Design and build a working device whose functions are controlled by a programmed microcontroller.
  • Create a portfolio explaining the project and theme, with your source code, work log, materials list, evaluation of your work, and references.
  • Prepare an oral presentation that explains the research, the device's value, and how it works, including a live demonstration.

This year’s challenge

The 2027 theme is wearable technology. Your device should address that theme and have a useful real-world application.

How the competition works

Before the event

Complete and test the device, assemble the portfolio, and prepare the demonstration before the conference.

First round

Check in the device and portfolio, then give your presentation and demonstrate the device at your assigned time. Judges score all three parts.

How the event finishes

The student procedure does not list a separate semifinal round. The device, portfolio, and presentation are evaluated in the same competition sequence.

Know before you choose: The device must work and fit within 18 by 12 by 12 inches. The guide contains conflicting presentation-overtime wording, so confirm the timing details with your teacher before rehearsing for competition.

How your work is scored

Judges evaluate the documentation, device design and functionality, coding and circuitry, and presentation. This event does not require a separate qualifying knowledge test in the listed procedure.
