Before Class

Provide one FYF workbook, pencil, and Canvas-capable device per student. Default companion prints: 0. Print one two-page companion only for each no-workbook, enlarged, or paper-route student. Students use workbook + Canvas or one companion, not both. Project the locked FYF pages and the supplied source-label/system model in the Teacher Guide. Work is individual; pairs may rehearse the systems explanation. H&L is optional.

50-Minute Flow

1. Infrastructure is a system — 5 minutes

Students name an Irving road, drainage, transit, water, or public-space system and one group that depends on it. Do not promise a universal 50-year service life.

2. Engineering cluster and local pathway — 10 minutes

Use FYF p. 103 and the dated district card. Clarify that the public MacArthur page says Engineering while the 2026–27 coursebook names Civil Engineering. Students describe what problem the cluster solves and how engineers, technicians, surveyors, planners, and construction workers exchange evidence.

3. Civil Engineer evidence — 15 minutes

Students record duties, typical entry education, May 2024 U.S. median, outlook, and licensure boundary. Entry-level work does not universally require a PE. Any local Xello figure stays in a separate field with geography/year/measure.

4. FYF kitchen systems decision — 15 minutes

Students draw on the FYF p. 175 grid, using the existing p. 174 appliance plan. They document one placement that forced a second change. The analogy is limited: the activity practices dependency reasoning, not civil-engineering approval.

5. Exit — 5 minutes

In three short jobs: describe the cluster, name one civil-engineering career and its work, and state one accurate preparation requirement.

Teacher Look-Fors

  • Students preserve U.S./median/May 2024/BLS labels.
  • They distinguish entry education from PE licensure.
  • The systems explanation names a first choice, affected element, and reason.
  • By minute 12, source labels are intact; by minute 28, career/preparation and pathway boundaries are present; by minute 42, FYF p. 175 shows a first choice, second effect, and reason. If one-third label the wage as local or starting pay, reshow the model. Trim the pathway share or partner rehearsal, not the career/preparation evidence, systems decision, or private exit.

Collect one Canvas response or one companion. Initial FYF p. 175 during the final monitoring lap, then close devices.

Use the fixed career card and the kitchen overlay. No live app, partner, or open research is required.
