Before Class

  1. Post or project the two-page fixed evidence reference. Default printing is none. Do not send students through five industries and unrestricted search.
  2. Open current BLS pages for Surveying and Mapping Technicians, Cartographers and Photogrammetrists, and Aerospace Engineering and Operations Technologists/Technicians.
  3. Post the classroom classification rule and the May 2024 all-occupations median/growth comparison.
  4. Open the unpublished retryable Quiz.

Warm-Up: Drone Is a Tool, Not One Salary (5 min)

Students respond:

Two workers both use drone images. One gathers site photos; another turns images and LiDAR into maps. Why might their training and pay differ?

Use responses to establish the lesson boundary: “drone pilot” may be a task, credential, specialty, or job title, but it does not create one reliable wage series.

Activity 1: Read Three Evidence Cards (12 min)

Students identify for each occupation:

  • one core duty;
  • the drone/data connection;
  • typical preparation;
  • May 2024 U.S. national median;
  • 2024-2034 growth; and
  • annual openings.

Model the label: “BLS, May 2024 U.S. national median, accessed August 2026.” Do not call the value DFW, starting, entry, or guaranteed pay.

Activity 2: Apply the Published Rule (15 min)

Students use the same rule for all three occupations:

  • high wage when national median exceeds $49,500;
  • high demand when growth exceeds 3%, with annual openings kept visible; and
  • high skill when documented preparation/training and specialized duties meet the course definition.

They must cite the number or preparation/duty evidence in every Yes/No decision. Explain that “No under this rule” is not an insult and “Yes” is not a promise of employment.

Activity 3: Complete and Repair the Evidence Check (13 min)

Students complete the unpublished five-question Canvas practice Quiz. The questions check the pay label, preparation, high-wage classification, high-demand classification, and a recommendation for fictional Taylor that includes one tradeoff and a current verification step. Students read the feedback and repair any missed label or reasoning. If Canvas is unavailable, the teacher asks or posts the same five prompts; a second packet is not required.

Exit Check (5 min)

Students state which occupation Taylor should investigate first, one tradeoff, and the next fact Taylor must verify. More than one recommendation may earn full credit when it uses the fixed evidence.

Teacher Key

  • Surveying/mapping technician: HS typical; moderate-term OJT; $51,940; 5%; 7,600 openings. Under the published rule: high wage, high demand, and high skill when the student cites specialized duties plus moderate-term training.
  • Cartographer/photogrammetrist: bachelor's; $78,380; 6%; 1,000 openings. Under the rule: high skill, high wage, high demand.
  • Aerospace engineering/operations technologist or technician: associate typical; $79,830; 8%; 900 openings. Under the rule: high skill, high wage, high demand.
  • Annual openings prevent the false conclusion that the fastest growth rate always creates the most openings.
  • Lap 1, minute 14: sample five screens or responses. If two students detach a number from its year/geography/measure, pause and relabel one value together.
  • Lap 2, minute 30: require a number or preparation/duty fact beside each classification. If fewer than four of five sampled students cite evidence, model one Yes and one No before the Quiz.
  • Safe trim: skip whole-group reporting and send students directly to Q5. The Q5 recommendation and feedback repair are the exit check; do not require a second copy of the same answer.
  • Collection: Canvas Quiz feedback is the response home. With no Canvas, use the five projected prompts and collect one half-sheet or record a private oral check; do not print another packet.

Supports and Equal Routes

  • Use one occupation card at a time with icons and a consistent row order.
  • Students may type, write, use speech-to-text, or answer privately by media.
  • The fixed guide replaces open search, H&L, and partner dependency.
  • An absent student uses the same posted reference and evidence check with no live platform beyond Canvas.
