Daily Learning Contract
- Topic: Career Preparation
- Objective: Students will research and describe current Texas cosmetology training and license requirements and investigate the steps required to enter high-school or postsecondary training using a pathway decision.
- TEKS: d(2)(A), d(3)(G)
- Demonstration of Learning: Completed FYF p. 131 quality check plus the two-page Cosmetology Pathway Decision.
Lesson Overview
| Time | 50 minutes |
| Objectives | Evaluate and revise an SFX design, identify current Texas Cosmetology Operator requirements, compare high-school and postsecondary training settings, and report questions needed before enrollment |
| TEKS | d(2)(A), d(3)(G) |
| Deliverable | FYF p. 131 quality check plus two-page Cosmetology Pathway Decision |
| Materials | FYF p. 131, evidence guide, two-page pathway decision; optional enlarged no-workbook quality sheet |
Before Class
- Have students open FYF p. 131. Print one double-sided Pathway Decision per student. Post the dated Texas Cosmetology Operator Evidence Guide digitally; print one copy per pair only when devices are unavailable.
- Keep the separate quality sheet as an enlarged/no-workbook route; print one only for each student without the workbook, not a class set.
- Use the fixed evidence page so students can complete the lesson without live TDLR navigation.
- Note the current district wording: Cosmetology is listed at Cardwell, Irving, MacArthur, and Nimitz. Do not present Ratteree as the current location.
- For this in-state beginner scenario, use the current TDLR Apply page's 1,000-hour licensed-school route. Do not substitute an informal salon apprenticeship. Out-of-state, equivalence, and other special application cases are outside this lesson.
- Keep the five-question Canvas practice check optional after the pathway decision or for recovery; it is not part of the default 50 minutes.
Warm-Up (5 min)
WARM-UP: What is one part of your model that still works today, and what is one part you would rebuild first?
Activity 1: Quality Check and Revision (10 min)
Use FYF p. 131. Students rate:
- how clearly the texture reads;
- whether layers or pieces stay aligned or attached; and
- whether the final build follows the concept map.
Students cite one visible success, identify the cause of the biggest problem, and describe the final improvement plan. The optional expanded sheet provides a labeled revision drawing when that route is instructionally useful.
Activity 2: Read the Current Evidence (13 min)
Students annotate the fixed evidence guide:
- box the 1,000-hour requirement;
- underline the written and practical exams;
- star the age and application fee;
- bracket the current Irving ISD campus list; and
- circle one item that still requires a counselor, coursebook, CTE office, or school answer.
Clarify that the TDLR license requirements stay the same whether the approved training happens during high school or after graduation. Cost, schedule, transportation, admission, and local hours cannot be guessed.
Activity 3: Compare and Recommend (15 min)
Students complete the two-route table for an Irving ISD high-school setting and a licensed postsecondary school. Then they recommend a route for Alex using one verified fact and one unanswered question.
Students write exact enrollment questions for three sources and put the five license steps in order. This is stronger evidence than ranking invented costs or completion dates.
Exit Check and Collect (7 min)
What state requirement stays the same in both routes, and what local question could change the decision?
DELIVERABLE: Quality/revision evidence and complete pathway decision.
Safe trim: Omit the optional Quiz or extended route discussion. Protect the two-setting comparison, ordered license steps, exit, and collection.
Teacher Key
- Current common requirement: a 1,000-hour Cosmetology Operator course at a licensed school.
- Written exam eligibility begins after the school reports 900 hours; practical exam eligibility follows completion of 1,000 hours and the written exam.
- Current application facts: age 17, $50 nonrefundable fee, two-year license.
- Valid local questions include admission, campus, transportation, schedule, high-school hours, tuition, supply cost, program approval, and completion time.
- Either training setting can be recommended if the evidence and unanswered question fit Alex.
Support and Absence Route
- Read one evidence section at a time and use the mark-up key.
- Provide bilingual labels: license/licencia, training/capacitación, exam/examen, fee/tarifa, question/pregunta.
- Allow oral rehearsal before the 3-4 sentence recommendation.
- The fixed guide and worksheet are the full absence route; no live website is required.
