Day 3: Add Real Experiences in Xello

Students will explore and list two current opportunities for earning college credit in high school using current district course evidence.

Daily Learning Contract

  • Topic: College Credit
  • Objective: Students will explore and list two current opportunities for earning college credit in high school using current district course evidence.
  • TEKS: d(3)(B)
  • Demonstration of Learning: Xello Completion Standards evidence and a completed two-opportunity Canvas constructed response.

Accuracy note

The live Grade 8 configuration requires Education experiences (10 minutes; add at least one) and Volunteer hours (15 minutes; add at least one hour). Education experiences is a documented catch-up from the earlier block. School subjects at work is not assigned to Grade 8 and may only be used as supplemental practice.

Learning target

I can record real experiences and identify two current ways a high-school student may earn college credit.

Before class

Provide one internet-connected device per student, one teacher device with the Xello Completion Standards report open, and one teacher display for the two fixed course cards. Keep one printed one-page college-credit fallback per student only if Canvas is unavailable; do not print it by default. This is individual profile work, not a shared-device or team task.

Lesson flow

1. Privacy and honesty check (4 minutes)

Record only an experience that actually happened. Do not invent volunteer hours. Do not include private contact information, client names, medical details, or a public link to a student profile.

2. Education experiences (10 minutes)

Open Xello → About Me → Experiences → Education. Add at least one actual education experience and save it. Students who already meet the completion standard verify it and improve a description if useful.

3. Volunteer hours (15 minutes)

Open Volunteer experiences and add at least one completed hour. A student with no completed volunteer hour does not fabricate one; the teacher records that student for supervised catch-up after a real experience is available.

4. College-credit opportunity response (14 minutes)

Students use two fixed current coursebook cards in Canvas: English III Dual Credit (H) and AP Biology. In the Canvas constructed response, they list both opportunities, identify each type, state one requirement or limitation for each, and name one fact to verify with a counselor. The current coursebook says English III Dual Credit (H) is open in grades 10-12 after English II and awards high-school and college credit. It lists AP Biology for grades 11-12 after Biology with Chemistry completed or taken at the same time. An AP course does not guarantee college credit; each receiving institution sets its policy. Industry certification is a valuable credential but is not itself college credit.

Point-of-use frame: “The source lists _ as a _ opportunity. One requirement or limitation is ____.”

5. Verify, submit, and reset (7 minutes)

The Canvas constructed response is the college-credit evidence; do not assign a second exit sheet. Students submit it, confirm Education experiences and Volunteer hours status privately with the teacher, and close Xello. The printable response is an outage/access fallback only.

(d(3)(B))

Trim point: if the class is behind at minute 34, keep both required Xello saves and the two-opportunity constructed response; reduce whole-group debrief to one counselor-verification example. Do not invent or rush volunteer evidence.

Active monitoring move

  • Minute 14 CFU: verify Education experiences is saved or the student is on the documented recovery route.
  • Minute 29 CFU: verify Volunteer hours is saved or catch-up is recorded; never direct a student to invent an hour.
  • Lap 3: check that each constructed response names both opportunities and one requirement/limitation for each. If more than one in four students treats AP enrollment as guaranteed college credit, pause and reteach receiving-institution policy before submission.

Teacher verification and fallback

Use the Xello Completion Standards report, not a public screenshot, to verify completion. A platform outage moves the required task to supervised catch-up. The one-page print check is only a fallback for the college-credit response; it does not replace Xello. Students may use the licensed My Experiences guide in authenticated Canvas.
