Warm-Up (5 min)

WARM-UP: Name one career you want to keep exploring and one fact you still need before you could make a decision.

Students may choose careers outside Health Science. Saving a career means keeping it for comparison, not committing to it.

Activity 1: Required Xello Save Careers (30 min)

Protect the full configured time. The Bowie Grade 8 Completion Standards require students to save at least three careers.

Default setup is individual work with one device per student. A peer may navigate beside a student, but each student saves careers in their own account. Provide one reflection per student as paper or digital annotation.

  1. Open Xello through ClassLink.
  2. Use Explore Careers or a profile recommendation.
  3. Open a career and review daily tasks, preparation, and work conditions.
  4. Save the career.
  5. Repeat until at least three careers appear in the saved-careers list.

The teacher checks the Completion Standards report. A screenshot may help with troubleshooting, but the Xello report is the completion record.

Safe trim: Shorten the comparison to one career, one evidence statement, and one fact to verify. Do not cut the 30-minute Xello block or the final report/catch-up check. Reserve two minutes for students to confirm saves, sign out, and close personal account screens.

Students who cannot access Xello complete the paper reflection and move to a supervised catch-up list. Paper work does not replace the district completion requirement.

Activity 2: Individual Comparison (10 min)

Students complete the Xello Save Three Careers Reflection. They identify:

  • one saved career that currently fits,
  • one Week 0 result or building block that supports the choice,
  • one career that needs more research, and
  • the exact fact they will check next.

H&L App Exploration and eDynamic Unit 4.2 Part 2 are optional extensions. They do not replace the required Xello task.

Exit Ticket (5 min)

EXIT TICKET (Concept Map / Connection Diagram) · Printable PDF:

Place one saved career in the center. Connect it to:

  1. one daily responsibility,
  2. one preparation step,
  3. one work condition or salary-source label, and
  4. one reason to keep exploring or rule it out.

Star the connection that comes from a verified source. (d(1)(C))

Differentiation

  • Support: Reduce the initial browse to three teacher-selected career pages, then allow the student to replace one after completing the minimum.
  • Extension: Compare one saved Health Science career with one saved career from another cluster using the same three evidence categories.
  • ELL: Pre-teach save = guardar, compare = comparar, work condition = condición de trabajo, preparation = preparación. Students may use Xello audio and language supports when available.
