Daily Learning Contract
- Topic: Favorite Clusters
- Objective: Students will identify career opportunities within a favorite career cluster by reviewing cluster descriptions, saving at least one cluster in Xello, and explaining one career connection.
- TEKS: d(1)(C)
- Demonstration of Learning: Students save at least one Favorite cluster in Xello and complete a cluster-career-reason connection with one high-school experience to investigate.
Lesson Overview
| Time | 50 minutes |
| Required Xello task | Favorite clusters, 40 minutes, save at least one |
| Completion evidence | Xello Completion Standards report |
| Materials | Xello screenshots, Favorite Cluster Connection, locked teacher guide |
Before Students Arrive
- Check Xello rosters and open the Completion Standards report.
- Open the two student-path screenshots in Canvas.
- Open the locked Xello My career clusters guide for teacher background. It is a 90-minute expanded lesson that assumes Matchmaker and saved careers and targets two clusters. Do not impose those extras today.
- Post or print the Favorite Cluster Connection.
Bellringer — Career Families (5 min)
Prompt: Put these jobs into families: nurse, software developer, welder, cybersecurity analyst, dental hygienist, and network administrator. What rule did you use?
Define a career cluster as a family of careers that share related knowledge and skills. One career may connect to more than one cluster.
Activity 1 — Model the Xello Path (5 min)
Project the exact route:
- district SSO;
- Xello;
- About Me; and
- Favorite clusters.
Show how to expand a cluster description and inspect example careers. Also model Explore careers and its cluster filter as an optional research route.
Activity 2 — Explore More Than One Cluster (30 min)
Students read cluster descriptions and inspect example careers before deciding. They may use suggested clusters, but a suggested result is a starting point rather than a verdict.
Turn and Talk: “One career in this cluster is . It fits because .”
Active-monitor for students who save the first visible option without reading. Ask them to compare it with one other cluster before returning to the decision.
Activity 3 — Save and Verify (5 min)
Students save at least one Favorite cluster and confirm it appears in About Me. The teacher checks the Completion Standards report after class or during the final minutes.
Activity 4 — Career Connection (10 min)
Students complete the Favorite Cluster Connection:
- favorite cluster;
- one career in or near it;
- reason;
- one high-school course, program, organization, or experience to investigate; and
- interested, unsure, or not interested in IT/cybersecurity.
The cluster does not need to be Information Technology. The point is an evidence-based choice, not loyalty to this week's topic.
Teacher Guidance
- Minimum: one saved cluster. Do not require two clusters, three saved careers, or a Xello Assignment today.
- The paper connection is a meaningful learning artifact, but it does not replace the required platform save.
- Use the live report rather than screenshots of student profiles as completion evidence.
Supports
- Read cluster descriptions aloud or use text-to-speech.
- Provide cluster, career, and reason stems at the point of use.
- Pair students for navigation while keeping the final reason individual.
- Accept an oral reason recorded by the teacher before the student writes.
If Xello Is Unavailable or a Student Is Absent
Record the access issue. The student completes the paper connection with a cluster they know, then completes the required Xello save during the next supervised catch-up block. Do not create a second account.
