Warm-Up (5 min)

WARM-UP: Name one technology you use today that did NOT exist when your parents were in middle school. (Hint: smartphones, video calls, streaming, social media, AI chatbots, etc.)

Quick share. Bridge: "New technology can create a new job title, but it can also change an older occupation. Today you separate the title from the evidence."


Activity 1: Choose and Model an Emerging IT Career (8 min)

The TEKS standard d(1)(D) requires students to research and evaluate emerging occupations. For this lesson, students examine new titles and rapidly changing work. Project the six choices from the dated evidence guide:

  1. AI or Machine Learning Engineer — uses Computer and Information Research Scientists as a broader proxy.
  2. Cloud Architect — uses Computer Network Architects as a broader proxy.
  3. Information Security Analyst — exact BLS occupation; rapidly growing work.
  4. Data Scientist — exact BLS occupation; rapidly growing work.
  5. UX Designer — uses Web and Digital Interface Designers as the closest BLS occupation.
  6. Drone Software Developer — uses Software Developers as a broader proxy.

Each student picks one career. Table groups may spread choices so Day 5 includes variety, but students are not assigned an unwanted career solely to prevent duplicates.

Before students begin, model the source-label decision with two rows from the guide:

  • Data Scientist is an exact BLS occupation. Its pay and growth figures describe the selected occupation.
  • AI or Machine Learning Engineer uses Computer and Information Research Scientists as a broader proxy. Those figures provide context for related work; they do not become an exact salary or growth claim for every AI/ML engineer.

Ask students to turn and tell a partner which statement is safe: “BLS reports this exact career” or “BLS reports a related occupation that helps us understand this career.” Listen for students who treat proxy as “fake” or “wrong”; clarify that a proxy is useful when its limit is stated.


Activity 2: Controlled Source Research (30 min)

The evidence guide supplies a dated BLS starting point for every choice. Students open the named BLS page when available and complete the research sheet. They must distinguish what the source actually measures from the title they selected.

Use Xello as an optional localized salary cross-check only when the exact career, DFW geography, pay measure, and date are visible. H&L may support exploration, but neither live platform is required evidence. Do not ask students to hunt through general Google results or search snippets for a current job posting during this lesson.

Students complete the Emerging Tech Research Template (Printable PDF):

  1. selected career title;
  2. BLS occupation actually used;
  3. exact match or proxy;
  4. two or three work tasks;
  5. typical preparation;
  6. national median pay with year;
  7. growth rate with year range; and
  8. technology, demand, or work-task change supporting the emerging claim.

Active Monitoring: Walk one lap at minute 10 targeting BLS occupation plus exact/proxy label and a second lap at minute 22 targeting the emerging-work explanation. Stop students who copied a proxy number as though it described the exact title. If several students are stuck, re-model the AI/ML proxy row from the guide.

Facilitation Tip

A missing standalone BLS title is not proof that a career is emerging. The student needs separate evidence that technology, demand, or work tasks are changing. The proxy tells the reader only about a broader occupation.

Evidence question (DOK 3): Would you recommend the selected career to a student who wants rapidly changing work? Use two dated facts and explain the limit created by an exact or proxy source.


Evidence Comparison (7 min)

Use the Emerging and Established IT Career Comparison (Printable PDF). Students compare the occupation, work task, exact/proxy label, May 2024 national median, and 2024-34 growth rate, then write one evidence claim and one limit. Differentiation

  • Support: Use the dated evidence guide, preselect one of the two exact-match choices, and prefill the BLS occupation. Students may highlight the pay, growth, and preparation lines before transferring them to the research sheet.
  • Extension: Students research a SECOND emerging career and compare them on salary, growth, and education. Which is the better bet for someone starting their career today?
  • ELL: Provide bilingual labels for the evidence fields: occupation = ocupación, task = tarea, preparation = preparación, median pay = salario mediano, growth = crecimiento, exact match = coincidencia exacta, proxy = ocupación aproximada. Allow oral rehearsal before students write the evidence claim.
