HELP! FIND THE PROBLEM
Before you fix anything, say out loud what is actually wrong.
This week / Esta semana: Help! (define the problem) → Hopper Race (prototype) → Super Cleanup (test the designs).
📢 A dog that will not stop making a weird noise. A little brother who keeps knocking your stuff off the desk. A locker that jams every single morning. Engineers do not start by building. They start by naming the problem out loud. Today you meet Kiki, and Kiki is trying to tell you something.

Build Kiki the dog
Open the SPIKE App and find Invention Squad → Help!, then follow the building instructions with your partner. Split the job: one person hunts parts, one person builds, then trade. Kiki uses the Color Sensor, so keep that connection clean.
Run the first program and just listen
Kiki reacts to the color of whatever you hold in front of the Color Sensor. Run the first stack and do not fix anything yet. Write down exactly what you heard and saw. Sounds, order, how long, what set it off.
Run the second program and compare
Same dog, different code, different sounds. Run the second stack. What changed? If Kiki were a real dog, what would that second set of sounds mean?
Sixty seconds. List every problem you can think of.
Set a timer for one minute. As a team, list every problem Kiki might be having. Hungry, scared, hurt, bored, lost, ignored, wrong. Go for quantity here, not quality. Bad ideas on the list are fine.
Trade lists with another team
Compare your lists. Cross out anything that is really a solution wearing a problem costume. Then pick the one problem your team wants to solve and write it as a real problem statement: who, what is happening, and why it matters.
Write your criteria for success
Finish this: we will know Kiki's problem is solved when ______. Write two or three criteria, and make them specific enough that another team could pick up your sheet and test whether you actually did it.
🔍 PROBLEM, NOT SOLUTION
• "Kiki needs a food bowl" is a solution.
• "Kiki makes a hungry sound every morning and nobody in the house notices" is a problem.
• A problem statement names who is affected, what is happening, and why it matters.
• If your sentence starts with "add," "build," or "put a," you wrote a solution again.
Engineers who skip this step build the wrong thing beautifully.

Construye a Kiki el perro
Abre la SPIKE App y busca Invention Squad → Help!, luego sigan las instrucciones de construcción con tu compañero. Repartan el trabajo: uno busca las piezas, otro arma, y luego cambian. Kiki usa el Color Sensor, así que revisa bien esa conexión.
Corre el primer programa y solo escucha
Kiki reacciona al color de lo que pongas frente al Color Sensor. Corre el primer stack y no arregles nada todavía. Anota exactamente qué escuchaste y viste. Los sonidos, el orden, cuánto duró, qué lo activó.
Corre el segundo programa y compara
Mismo perro, otro código, otros sonidos. Corre el segundo stack. ¿Qué cambió? Si Kiki fuera un perro de verdad, ¿qué significaría ese segundo grupo de sonidos?
Sesenta segundos. Anota todos los problemas posibles.
Pon un cronómetro de un minuto. En equipo, anoten todos los problemas que Kiki podría tener. Hambre, miedo, dolor, aburrimiento, se perdió, lo ignoran. Aquí van por cantidad, no por calidad. Las ideas malas también cuentan.
Intercambien listas con otro equipo
Comparen sus listas. Tachen todo lo que en realidad sea una solución disfrazada de problema. Luego escojan el único problema que su equipo quiere resolver y escríbanlo como un planteamiento del problema de verdad: a quién afecta, qué está pasando y por qué importa.
Escribe tus criterios de éxito
Completa esto: sabremos que el problema de Kiki está resuelto cuando ______. Escriban dos o tres criterios, y háganlos tan específicos que otro equipo pueda tomar su hoja y comprobar si de verdad lo lograron.
🔍 PROBLEMA, NO SOLUCIÓN
• "Kiki necesita un plato de comida" es una solución.
• "Kiki hace un sonido de hambre cada mañana y nadie en la casa se da cuenta" es un problema.
• Un planteamiento del problema dice a quién afecta, qué pasa y por qué importa.
• Si tu oración empieza con "agregar", "construir" o "ponerle", volviste a escribir una solución.
Los ingenieros que se saltan este paso construyen preciosamente la cosa equivocada.
