Facilitator’s Guide: AIR Unit 3 — Sailing Home

Two lessons to close the AIR arc: read two sources that disagree, build a sensing robot, then finish with the Xello career check-in.

📅 2 lessons🤖 RVR + micro:bit🏆 110 points in the module

The unit at a glance

Module itemWhat happensPoints
Lesson 1: Conflicting ViewpointsA short video, then two articles that reach opposite conclusions about ocean plastic. Students fill an AEIOU organiser on the worksheet, capturing what each text claims and what it leaves out.5
Lesson 2: RVR + micro:bit Temperature BotA walkthrough video, then students mount a micro:bit on the RVR and code a temperature bot — the sensor reports a number, their code decides what counts as too hot. The only lesson in the course that uses both devices at once.100

Xello Check-in: Explore Career Matches LessonThe Xello lesson on why the career matches came out the way they did, then a screenshot of the completion screen. Runs last.5

Materials + prep

  • AI Ethics Debate is an optional extension in Enrichment · Parked Alternates. Use it when you want another discussion day. The core route closes with Temperature Bot and the Xello check-in.
  • RVRs charged and micro:bits with battery packs, together, for Lesson 2. Both devices, same day, same table.
  • Both Lesson 1 articles opened and skimmed. They genuinely disagree, and knowing which evidence each one selects is what makes the discussion work.
  • Google Assignments launched once for Lessons 1 and 2 so you have seen the worksheets.
  • Xello through ClassLink for the closing check-in.

Watch-fors

  • Lesson 2 assumes two earlier units. It expects students to know the RVR from RVR Robotics (AIR Unit 2) and the micro:bit from AIR Unit 1: Leaving Land. Run those first, or budget a period for re-teaching the download step before anybody mounts anything.
  • The Xello check-in has prerequisites inside Xello. It needs the Matchmaker quiz from the SW1 check-in and three saved careers from the SW2 check-in. Without both, the lesson stays locked and the student cannot finish — check that before the period, not during it.

Grading

Lesson 2: RVR + micro:bit Temperature Bot is the unit’s Major grade, at 100 points. Lesson 1 and the Xello check-in are Minor grades, 5 points each, so the module holds 110 points. Lessons 1 and 2 come back as Google Assignments worksheets. The Xello check-in is a screenshot upload.
