Lesson 1 Intro to micro:bit and Block Coding
Run the lesson here; the student item below remains the independent and absence route.
Daily Learning Contract
Topic: Block-code workflow and device transfer
Objective: Students will explain how block instructions become a running micro:bit output and apply the correct tool-transfer workflow to run a program on the device.
- §126.19(c)(12)(A) — integrate use of appropriate technology terminology in scholarly inquiry and dialogue such as classroom discussion and written samples;
- §126.19(c)(12)(C) — select and use appropriate platform and tools, including selecting and using software or hardware to transfer data;
Demonstration of learning: Completed Lesson 1 worksheet, a program running on the micro:bit, and checkpoint evidence explaining the block-to-device workflow.
Before class
Time: One class period
Student route: Learn: Lesson 1 Intro to micro:bit and Block Coding
Use what already exists: Keep the existing full guide, presentation, worksheet, printable checkpoint, RISE Learn route, and EdPuzzle setup note.
Lesson flow
- Launch: Launch with a concrete question or failure that makes block-code foundations matter.
- Model: Model one current example or tool move before students begin.
- Do: Guide the first decision together, then release students to the existing Canvas task.
- Check + support: Check for the named evidence, not completion alone; keep a visual sequence, sentence stems, and purposeful partner roles available.
- Close + handoff: Collect or verify the evidence and name the next lesson's connection.
Check before students leave
Ask students to point to the specific evidence above and explain one choice, test, or revision. Completion alone is not evidence of understanding.
Support + troubleshooting
Scaffold: Keep the visual task sequence visible, assign purposeful partner roles, and use the sentence stems on the student page before simplifying the task.
When students get stuck: Ask for the exact step where the tool, code, or task stopped. Check setup, inputs, and saved work before replacing the task or lowering the thinking.

Teaching it live instead?
Students normally move through the Learn lesson on their own, hosted in Articulate RISE. If you would rather present Lesson 1 to the whole group, these three files cover the same ground.
